In 2017 De^ARTivists United D^AU established the Betty G. Miller/Chuck Baird Tribute – group artwork projects to be made by Deaf students. Betty G. Miller is known as the Mother of De’VIA and Chuck Baird is known as the Father of De’VIA. To learn more about the first BGM/CB tribute and these two leaders, whom both passed away in 2012, go to https://deviacurr.wordpress.com/bgmiller-and-cbaird-tribute/

The very first D^AU Betty G. Miller and Chuck Baird tribute was for participating schools to create a reverse stencil banner using at least 5 resistance and 5 affirmation motifs as well as a central triangle with motif in the middle. With a small grant from the Puffin Foundation West, LTD, D^AU purchases and sent to each participating schools a 3 ft by 8 ft blank banner for the project.

This group art project was inspired by the 2nd Wave of De’VIA banner of 2013

Schools had to submit sketches for the banner and images of the final work with ASL video explanations. (school videos will be added soon – they are awesome!)
Special thanks to the participating schools, students, and teachers

We are totally wowed by what the students have created under the stewardship of their great art Deaf teachers. We know Betty and Chuck are smiling at their great process, progress, and creativity.  The banners will communicate about history, pride, progress, resistance, affirmation, Deaf View/Image Art and creativity to visitors of the schools, staff, faculty, and students
